Betting Guides: How to Bet in Nigeria

New to sports betting, or want to fill in the gaps? Our guides explain how to bet from the very first step: choosing a licensed site, opening an account, reading odds, building a bet slip and getting your money in and out. The basics are below, and the deeper guides are listed further down this page.

Our betting guides

Start with betting strategies that work once you know the basics, and use the odds calculator whenever you want to check a return.

How to bet: the basics in seven steps

  1. Choose a licensed bookmaker. In Nigeria, operators are licensed by the National Lottery Regulatory Commission or state boards such as the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority. Our best betting sites page compares the options.
  2. Register. Use your real name, date of birth and phone number. You must be 18 or older. Details that match your bank account make withdrawals smoother.
  3. Verify your account when asked. Many sites need identity checks before your first withdrawal.
  4. Deposit. Common methods include bank transfer, USSD codes, debit cards and wallets such as OPay and PalmPay. Methods and minimums vary by site.
  5. Pick a market and add it to your slip. Tap the odds next to the outcome you want.
  6. Enter your stake and confirm. Check the potential return before placing.
  7. Withdraw winnings to your bank account or wallet from the account area.

Bet slip meaning

A bet slip (or betslip) is the list of selections you are about to bet on. When you tap a price, it is added to the slip. From there you choose a single, an accumulator or a system bet, enter your stake and see the potential return. You can also book a slip to get a booking code and share it; see our booking codes section.

Reading odds

Nigerian sites show decimal odds. Your return is stake x odds. N1,000 at 1.80 returns N1,800 if it wins: N800 profit plus your stake. To see the chance a price implies, divide 1 by the odds: 1.80 implies about 55.6%. The lower the odds, the more likely the bookmaker thinks the outcome is, and the less you win.

Promo codes, alternative outcomes and other terms

  • Promo code: a code from the bookmaker that unlocks a bonus, usually entered at registration or deposit. See our bonuses section.
  • Booking code: a saved bet slip you can load or share.
  • Alternative outcomes: some sites offer a set of related markets on the same match, such as alternative goal lines or handicaps, so you can pick a different line or price.
  • Over 2 / over 2.5: whole-number lines such as over 2 can refund your stake if exactly two goals are scored (an "Asian" line); half-goal lines such as 2.5 cannot be a push. Check how your site settles each line.
  • Cash out: settling a bet early for an amount the bookmaker offers.
  • Void: a cancelled selection, usually treated as odds of 1.00 in an accumulator.

Withdrawals and minimums

Each bookmaker sets its own minimum deposit and minimum withdrawal, and these change over time. You will find the current figures in our operator reviews and key facts boxes. Before your first withdrawal, make sure your account is verified and the bank details match your registered name.

Bet responsibly from day one

Set a deposit limit when you open your account, decide how much you are happy to lose each month and stick to it. Betting should be entertainment, not a way to pay bills. If you are under 18, betting is not for you. Our responsible gambling page covers limits, time-outs and where to get help.

Use guides as a tool, not a promise

A guide can show you how a market works, how to read odds or how to check a bonus, but it cannot tell you what will happen in a match. The best way to use these pages is practical: read one topic, try it with a very small stake on a game you understand, and keep a simple record of what you staked and what came back. After a few weeks that record tells you more about your betting than any tip.

All our guides are written for adults 18+ only. They explain how betting works so you can make informed choices, but no guide can remove the risk: bet only with money you can afford to lose and take a break whenever it stops being fun.
