But the word covers very different poker games: a home game with friends, a table against other players online, a casino poker game against the dealer, or a poker machine with a pay table. Poker hands: the rankings you need to know
Almost every poker game uses the same five-card hand rankings. From strongest to weakest:

The main poker games
Texas Hold'em
The most played poker game in the world. Each player gets two private cards, and five community cards are dealt face up in stages: the flop (three cards), the turn (one) and the river (one). You make the best five-card hand from any combination of your two cards and the five on the board. There are four betting rounds, and you can win either by having the best hand at showdown or by making everyone else fold.
Omaha
Similar to Hold'em, but you get four private cards and must use exactly two of them with three from the board. Hands are stronger on average, so a hand that is good in Hold'em may be weak in Omaha.
Five Card Draw and Seven Card Stud
Older poker card games still popular in home games. In draw poker you get five cards and can swap some once. In stud, some of your cards are dealt face up and there are no community cards.
Casino poker vs player poker
This is the most important difference for anyone who wants to play poker online in Nigeria.
- Player poker (peer-to-peer). You play against other people. The site takes a small fee from each pot or tournament entry, called the rake. Your skill against the other players decides your long-term results. This is the format of big brands like PokerStars and events such as the World Series of Poker (WSOP).
- Casino poker (against the house). Games like Casino Hold'em, Three Card Poker and Caribbean Stud are played against the dealer, with fixed payouts. There is a house edge, like roulette or blackjack. Good decisions reduce that edge but do not remove it.
Most Nigerian betting sites with a casino section offer casino poker variants, often in RNG and live dealer versions, rather than full peer-to-peer poker rooms. Check what an operator actually offers before you sign up for poker specifically.
Poker machines and video poker
Searches for poker machines usually mean one of two things. In Australia, "pokies" or poker machines is the local word for slot machines. In most other places it means video poker: a single-player game where you are dealt five cards, choose which to hold, draw replacements and are paid according to a pay table.
